planning a “fondaco-network” in Mestre (Venice)

Until ‘600 fortune of Venice has been linked to its connections with the East part of the world, thanks to which sciences, arts, products were imported. With the imposition of sailing and the consequent extention of traffic from the Mediterranean to the oceans, especially the Atlantic Ocean, a process of constant decline  increased: it became the decline of the entire West from the beginning of the 90s of the last century. In fact, the center of gravity of scientific advancement and economics moved along the U.S. Atlantic coast before, and only recently,  involved quickly the countries of the East.
The project aims to define a space, that is the “warehouses of the East”, able to attract oriental cultures and experiences in order to trigger a new development cycle involving the West. This space is located in the former industrial area of Porto Marghera platforms which would to become so tip innovation in the northeast, a bridge between East and West and one of the platforms qualified for the European Union in order to re-establish its system of relations.  2010 was the Year of China in Italy: this was a great opportunity to propose a new system of warehouses, which  makes critical of a historic Venetian settlement system.
The space of the project.
The spatial context of  the warehouse system is divided between Via Torino, in Mestre, Marghera Port and Maritime and qualifies it as a system. It would be able to reinterpretate the new metropolis , connecting the historic business places  (the Maritime), the industrial one (Porto Marghera), the  new directional city (via Torino) and the new regional center (Mestre).


By analysing the contemporary city and its development, which is inclined to be straight, we identify in the fibers the means able to connect the different sections of Mestre. New technologies put in place a process through which morphology of immaterial resources is taking the place of morphology of physical resources, as we always considered them. In that sense the fiber represents a manner of planning that finds its foundation  in biology and in the neural network: it would be possible to think about the city not through the concept of nodes and wildlife corridor but through the concept of a various intensity fiber, able to transport things, people and information. The new urban space so identified is turning on to grant new possibilities.  It shapes like a green space in which it is possible to identify biodiversity and new habitats creation, linked to the lagoon and the Venetian inland, in the manner of pander the coming climate changing (Comm. UE 670/2005, Dir. Habitat 92/43 CEE).  It also incorporates and organises an ecological and multi-modal transport network able to optimize all transportation modalities  (Libro Verde_Verso una nuova cultura della mobilità urbana,Bruxelles 2007).  It is a size able to join the atom with the bit, the material source with the immaterial one, connecting people among them and with the rest of the world in an interactive manner so that they can share real-time datas. Elaborating the theme of the contemporary warehouse means to think about a place not only with a commercial value, but also a place where knowledge and different cultures meet and where the Oriental and Occidental world can communicate.  In that sense first goal to reach will be the one to create a dialogue between with the East and the West with an holistic approach. We intend to share the model of Oriental Park as a welcome place for new knowledge and where the harmony with nature exists.
The second goal to rich is to gain the accessibility of information in the manner to create a multi-cultural society opened to innovation and motivate towards creativity. Launching the process of “miniaturization”, of  “de-materialization” and “disentanglement” from a fix position, it is possible to conceive new places for human interaction that would be not physical but digital spaces.
Starting point is a conscious planning of spaces and technologies with the aim of minimal environmental impact and the decrease of CO2 emissions through the use of renewable energies and the construction of a eco-friendly warehouse buildings (Zero carbon). This would be possible choosing local, natural, renewable and sustainable  materials (Rifiuti 2015). We consider rain water and recycling and reuse and an optimization of  the hydro-system management (Dir. UE 60/2000). Also in the garbage management it will be considered the reuse.
Another strategy able to face the lack of food resources is the self- sustenance through the in-loco production which uses the minimum soil surface (vertical farm). We promote 0-kilometers food. The final purpose is to develop the life standard of the people and their satisfaction is joined to the wealth of the Earth.
